The Care Certificate programme was introduced in 2015 as part of the response to the Francis Inquiry into the failings of care at Mid-Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust.
New starter Health Care Support Workers (HCSWs) begin their Care Certificate journey during induction week, where they attend two dedicated days of Care Certificate training. These sessions introduce the core standards, build foundational knowledge, and provide practical guidance to support safe, compassionate care in clinical settings.
Following induction, HCSWs continue their learning in the work area by completing the Care Certificate workbook. This involves gathering evidence, demonstrating skills in practice, and being assessed by supervisors or assessors to confirm competence across all standards. With ongoing support from the Professional Development and Education (PDE) Team and ward staff, HCSWs are guided through the process to successfully achieve their Care Certificate and embed high-quality care in their daily practice.
